Thanks Mak. I think I will just put up with this limitation for now rather
than alter the registry.

You mentioned a 64 bit operating system should solve the problem. Do you
mean Windows Vista? The info below was from 2005 website, but says Vista
will ship with both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. Not quite sure what this
means, but it seems one could select the 64 bit version to install, which I
assume should be better:

"A: Virtually every Windows Vista product edition (with the exception of
Starter) ships with both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions on the same
DVD. Microsoft expects the computer buying public to switch to x64 during
Vista's lifetime. There will not be an Itanium version of Windows Vista."

How Vista versions will be shipped is uncertain still. It will probably be different for full versions vs. upgrade versions.

Vista comes in two platforms, x86 (32 bit) and x64. You can upgrade from x86 XP to x86 Vista, or from x64 XP to x64 Vista. To install x64 Vista on a system that has x86 XP requires a clean install - there is no upgrade path. x64 XP is only available through volume licensing or OEM. It's not purchasable over the counter. To run any flavor of x64, XP or Vista, requires a 64 bit processor.
