When I run DiskCleanup, I do not see any way to inhibit "compress old
files". Could you please be more specific.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Bill

File compression only occurs IF you Run DiskCleanup AND allow it to
compress old files. You get to choose!

It appears that WinXp automatically compresses files that haven't
been open for a long time. Is there anyway I can prevent this from
happening on an external HD?
Thanks in advance for your help,
