Re: Unmountable_Boot_Volume

FYI, I downloaded boot disk files, created the 6 disks & got into the
Recovery Console. Tried chkdsk /r & fixboot on C: which worked fine but
didn't fix the problem. When I try to access d: I get "An error occurred
during directory enumeration". Tried to run chkdsk /r on d: & it goes REALLY
slow & when it gets to 50% complete, it quits.

The complete error at regular boot up is:

"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

Technical Information:
Stop: 0x000000ED (0x867AC1E8, 0xc000009C,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Any additional thoughts?

Yes, absolutely. You will be able to create a floppy disk set (6
floppies) and boot to the Recovery Console with that. You cannot create
a bootable cd with the file on that link, works for floppy disks only.
Only use formated floppies without any errors on them, format them from
the Command Prompt (format a:) and make sure that all 1,457,664 bytes
are available, reject the diskette if it has any bytes in bad sectors.
Also, depending on you computer and disc setup you may need to use the
F6 option when you boot with the setup disk set.

John John,

Thank you very much for your response. I will read through the links
you sent. Are you saying that I can get access to the Recovery Console
without the WinXP CD, i.e. by downloading files that will allow me to create
a bootable floppy disk(s) or bootable CD?

No need to buy a new Windows XP cd, use this:

And review this:

This error has nothing to do with the boot.ini file, read here:

If the drive controller is not at fault you can try these from the
Recovery Console:

chkdsk /r
fixboot

Greetings All,

I've read the other posts on this topic and will try some of the solutions
posed. My problem is slightly different. I run WinXP Pro on my desktop. No
new hardware has been added. Recently downloaded & added the software for
"Second Life" (not sure if that's related). Don't think any cables or drives
are loose. The computer (a desktop) has been sitting in the same spot for
months & running fine & hasn't been moved or disturbed.

Started getting "Unmountable_Boot_Volume" at startup.

Trying to start in Safe Mode doesn't help; I get the same error message.

I was able to successfully Boot with a bootable LINUX CD & mount and access
the internal hard drive (so I don't think it's a hardware problem). I was
able to extract a few of the files I needed (but not all of them; for example
I couldn't copy all of my iTunes files & folders (was really slow & just hung
up sometimes); at least not through the LINUX GUI; might try doing that
through a Konsole command tonight (i.e. cp -r & see if that works), but would
like to try & resurrect/restore the hard drive completely & bring WinXP back
to life.

My questions are:

(1) Can I repair/replace the Boot.ini file? If so, how?
(2) Will I be able to boot from a WinXP installation disk? I can't find my
WinXP disk but I'm happy to purchase another copy if that will help. Will
that allow me to fix the Boot.ini file?
(3) Is there another way to boot (floppys?) & possibly replace (or fix) the
Boot.ini file?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you.
