What moral duty? You are not the Microsoft customer, Granville Tech is (was).

The computer was working fine once upon a time - it is your responsibility to keep it that way.

That may be so. However, I am bound by the terms of a license to which Microsoft is a party. Microsoft is rightly trying to protect their intellectual property by preventing software theft. However, to do so effectively, they need to keep the public on their side. Providing a copy of software that I have a legal right to use does not seem an unreasonable request from me, as an individual consumer, to a mighty corporation.

Incidentally, my computer is still running fine, but I no longer have the ability to recover from, say, a major disk crash. I had a scare recently when the registry became corrupted and I couldn't boot the machine.

Have you actually read the EULA? It certainly doesn't sound like it.

I have read the EULA, and I've just re-read it. Is there something specific that you are referring to? I'm not trying to argue that they are legally bound to do anything, rather morally bound, which is nothing specifically to do with the license. I also think it's in their own best interests, and that of the industry, to be magnanimous when individual consumers run into difficulty. It seems to me that my only option is to purchase a retail copy of Windows XP Home, which seems to me like paying twice for the same thing!

You see there is nothing about any media replacement in the EULA. The issue of them providing you with a replacement for something that someone else provided is at the least a LONG stretch. You have an OEM license to use Windows XP home. The reason you can, or can't use it is immaterial to Microsoft. They certainly aren't obligated to provide any thing other than activation of a properly/legitimately installed operating system. If they DID decide to provide you with the media, YOU will need to contact them, and be painfully aware that what you receive is a generic OEM CD with none of the custom drivers or anything else that came from the vendor. You also would be responsible for any shipping/handling fees. But you will need to contact them.
