The version of Sun's JRE installed needs to be uninstalled as it contains vulnerabilities and bugs. Here's what was 'fixed' in 1.5.0_07 and subsequent releases -
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/ReleaseNotes.html#150_07
Do so from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and while you're there, UNinstall all older, vulnerable versions that are listed.
Then download the latest JRE from - http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Click the Download button next to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10
Put a mark next to Accept license agreement
Then grab the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language
After it downloads close the browser and any open programs
Install it
To enable debug logging you need to open the Java applet in the Control Panel. Click the Advanced tab and then the plus sign next to Debugging.

Under Java, the only option that I have is 'JRE 1.5.0_06 for <applet> (requires restart)' which is enabled (ticked).
Has anyone any ideas about how I can obtain the 'Java logging' option for the IE Advanced tab?
