Dell helpped me resolve the problem. It was a setting issue.

I had to go to: control panel>audio console>headphone detection. Under the "headphone
detection" tab there are two options folowing "when headphone jack is connected". Those options
are: "Automatically enable headphone settings" and "Automatically mute speakers". Once
selected, the problem was resolved.

Thanks for you help folks.

I don't believe this is a software problem. Most audio jack have a small switch (metal tab)
that breaks the connection to the speakers when a headphone is plugged in. It that metal tab
is broken or bent, then the switch does not work.
Unfortunately, the only repair for this is to replace the jack. Not an easy chore for even the
best tech.

speakers don't mute when headphones inserted

I recently noticed that my PC speakers are not muting when I plug-in my
headphones on my XP machine. I am fairly certain that they used to mute. I
recently performed a repair install of XP and I'm wonering if that may have
changed something.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Did you reinstall the sound card drivers?

I fail to find Audio Console in the Control Panel. Running XP Pro.

Rock: He was posting about the same problem. None of my XP machines have an "Audio Console" in
the Control Panel as was referenced in the prior post. His comment was relevant. Your criticism
was not.
