I downloaded service pack 2 from the windows site and as it got to the very
end of the download, it froze, I left it but after some time I realised that
it wasn't going to work so I tried to cancel it which didn't work so then I
restarted the comp.......
The computer started up OK and looked slightly different as if it had
updated to service pack 2 (although I wasn't so sure). It then came up that I
needed to download some other new programs to go along side service pack 2,
but when I tried to do this it kept crashing and restarting itself. I went
back to the website and again tried to download the new updates but when it
came to the installation it again restarted.
A message came up to say that an error had taken place and when I clicked
the button to report it, it told me that the problem was the video card or
something, and told me to go to the control panel, then display and then the
settings tab and turn the video card slider to minimum which I did, then
restarted the computer and now it won’t do anything!! It takes forever after
clicking start for the menu to come up and I tried to go to the control panel
but it won't come up - it takes so long for anything to happen.
Is there anything I can do? Could someone help me.
See if either of these can help get things working again:

If these don't work you might need to do a repair install with your XP installation CD to get things working.

The system needs to be running well with no problems and no malware infections for the update to SP2 to work. Also it's best to download the full installation program or get the SP2 CD and use that to do the update rather than having windows update do the installation.
Here are some links with info on how to download the the full installation package of SP2 or order the CD. They were plentiful and free when SP2 first came out, even showing up as freebees in computer mags. Instead of ordering the CD see if you can find someone that got the MS SP2 CD and use that - it will save you the shipping costs.
