Re: Windows XP and IE6 problems

Gerry

I am extremely grateful for the time you have spent on my laptop problems
and the depth of advice you have given me.

Here are the responses:

Event ID 1000 - I did as you suggested and it immediately told me to install
IE7, which I have done.

Event ID 1517 - I have done as you suggested

Event ID 10010 - The Windows Management Intrumentation Service is set to
Automatic and the service is shown as Started (just after rebooting).

Event IDs 7000 and 7001 - i am not sure what TM filter is, but Yes, I am
using Trend Micro and upgraded to 2007 last week.

I have had a look at the Event Log today and there is only one error, ie

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7022
Date: 24/11/2006
Time: 11:30:19 AM
User: N/A
Computer: PC319972416912
Description:
The Trend Micro Personal Firewall service hung on starting.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Looking forward to your continued suggestions, and again Thank You!

Thanks for the long list <g>. When trying to solve problems, such as you
have,
it can help to place the error reports in date / time order from a single
startup to
shutdown as many errors arise out of an earlier failure. We can perhaps try
this approach after we have eliminated some which are occurring.

You have a problem with your Windows Installer and automatic updating

Event ID: 1000 Suggested solution from:
http://swigartconsulting.blogs.com/tech_blender/2006/07/windows_update_.html

1.Go 2 the start menu
2.Right click "my computer"
3.Click "properties" then the "automatic updates"
tab
4.Choose "turn off automatic updates"
5.Reboot your computer
6.Go back to start menu and in all programs go to "windows update" you have
to
be connected to the internet.
7.Manually update windows.
8.Turn your automatic updates back on.

Event ID: 1517 -common problem. Suggested solution:

Download and install the User
Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
http://snipurl.com/5b61

UPHClean v1.5e readme.txt
http://snipurl.com/ko8m

Event ID: 7011
A symptom of problems.

Event ID: 10010
A problem with your Windows Management Instrumentation service. It has
either failed to start or has inexplicably stopped. Please advise whether
the Status has been set to Automatic and the service is shown as Started.
Select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services to check for
this information. Do your check just after rebooting.

Event ID: 7032
This error seems to be linked to Event ID: 10010. Sequencing these errors
may help.

Event ID: 1003
Probably linked to ID:10010 and ID:7032.

Event ID: 7000 and 7001
Both these errors suggest you are or have been using TM Filter by Trend
Micro.
Which is true?

Event: 7011
A symptom of problems.

Event ID: 3032
Something you did probably because another problem had occurred.

If we can resolve the Windows updating problem it could significantly
reduce some of the errors. Good luck.

Hope this helps.

Are there any Error / Warning Reports in the System section of Event
Viewer.
Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
