Hi Glen,
Did as you suggested, downloaded and installed as per the read me file and no luck, BUT, the installshield wizard placed the file in "C:\Program Files", should I have browsed to put it in "C:\Windows" or even in C:\Windows\Drivers" ?
Can you help? do you know where yours are?
You really had my hopes up there.. still not totally dashed.
Thanks whatever the final result.
Best wishes,
David

My laptop uses the same chip, but it uses the Sis7012 driver

You can download it at: http://www.sis.com/download/

Choose Windows XP, Audio Driver, SiS7012

Hope this helps,
Glen

Hi, I posted the T20 no audio. I'm sure it's because the chip on mine, the
Crystal Semiconductor (now Cirrus) Crystal SoundFusion device: CS4281 is not
compatible with xp. My T20 came with win98se. The T20s that came with xp had
one of 4 diff chips. It's really irksome though that according to the device
manager everything is workijg properly. The only solution is to get either a
usb or pcmia soundcard. I've tried drivers from driver guide that were
supposed to work with the 4281 & xp and tried the original 98 drivers, none
work. Lenovo do list the crystal chip no's that were on motherboards for the
T series that were sold with xp pre-installed. I can't remember what ones,
but as I say, if yours is, as mine, a CS4281, forget it.
Best wishes and good luck. If you figure out a different solution, please
let me know.
David.

For some reason, the only sound I get on my IBM ThinkPad T42 running WinXP SP
2 is the "beep." Sound was working fine for the last year until a Windows
Update about a month ago.

The Control Panel for "Sounds and Audio Devices" shows no playback devices
(under the Audio tab) and Device Manager lists only the following under
"Sound, video and game controllers":
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

So, I figured that all I need to do is re-install my sound card driver. I
went to IBM's support site:

http://www.ibm.com/products/finder/us/en/finders?pg=ddfinder

It auto-detected my system and referred me to:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-61604

I downloaded the driver and followed the installation instructions:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/license.do?filename=mobiles/1ga241ww.exe

However, when the installer finishes, I get the message:

"Driver Not Found! Reboot your system, and run this setup again."

Unfortunately, I get the same message after rebooting.

Apparently, I'm not the only person having problems installing SoundMAX
drivers:

http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-14328-audio-drivers-not-found.html

http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/drivers/22991-cant-find-driver-2.html

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=oplex_audio&message.id=4736

While it is comforting to find others having this problem, none of their
proposed solutions helped me get my sound working.

Things I've tried include:

- Upgraded all drivers to their current versions using ThinkVantage
Software Installer;

- Flashed BIOS with most recent version;

- Re-set BIOS to default to make sure that audio hardware is detected;

- Deleted one or more items listed in the Control Panel for "Sounds and
Audio Devices" (see list above) to get XP to autodetect the sound card
hardware; and

- Manually installed driver using Device Manager.

I still have no sound other than, "beep"!

I tried the PC Doctor hardware check that came with the laptop and runs in
DOS7 (?). It says there is no audo hardware. But, it lets me play any
frequency on the speaker. Others who have had this problem (see links above)
have also reported that DOS diagnostics reported no audio hardware but they
subsequently were successful at installing the SoundMAX driver and got their
sound working again.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anyway that I can IBM to
diagnose/fix with this...even for a fee?

Thanks for reading my tale of woe. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Was there an executable that installed the drivers? If not, direct the update to whatever folder they were saved to. Device Manager, Sound device, Properties, Update driver, Have Disk, etc..
