"Unable to log you on because the Netlogon service is not running."

Hello,

I have a 3 years old HP XP SP2 laptop which won't let me to login with any
account. (Domain/local). It takes a bit longer than usual to get to the
login screen. After inputting username and password it takes veeery long
time and notting happens. Then the screensaver kicks in and user is forced
to re-enter credentials. Hitting the keyboard once in awhile I managed to
prevent the screensaver and got this error message after about 10
minutes:"Unable to log you on because the Netlogon service is not running."

This is one of our employees laptop. She says that nothing extraordinary was
done with the machine. "It just stopped working". (It always does)

I have tried all possible F8 boot options. Safe mode, command prompt, last
known good... etc. Same thing with all of them. I also checked the entire
hardware with Eurosoft's PC Check (Which I regard as guite good software for
it's purpose) and found no error's. The local SAM database seems to be OK
because I can login with XP install CD recovery console using local
administrator account. File system seems to be also ok because it's readable
when I booted the machine with Linux live CD and DOS boot cd using ntfs4dos
utility. I tried to move the XP:s system log .evt files to another computer
for reading but could not open them there. I ran chkdsk -r and F-Secures
F-Prot from DOS which did not help, no viruses though. Also checked that the
disk is not full.

I think that this could be a result of file/registry corruption. But I
can't verify that.

I'm running out of new ideas here. I have done some extensive Googlin' but
can't get anywhere there either. So fresh ideas to fix this would be
welcome.

There's still the option of re-installing XP. One thing that concerns me
with this is that the laptop uses My Documents folder redirection to our
server and Offline Files. So if the user has made new docs to My Documents
before this happened they are in the %systemroot%\CSC folder and not in her
user profile. Right? I've got a fresh backup of the CSC folder but can it be
restored after re-install and get it to sync to server normally. The user
has been on a maternity holliday for a year so there might be lots of stuff
she don't want to lose.

Thanks
-Will
