yes, I'm aware that I have a lot of Registry issues. However, I stated
that
as of right now, reinstalling XP is not an option. That is why, I'm
looking
for other ways to solve my problem. If there is no way to fix my
situation,
then I want to be told that, instead of being told repeatedly to reinstall
XP
when I've said that I can't right now.
Unfortunately there are very few *practical* ways to fix this. I would
suggest that you start whatever you do by removing the drive from the
system, hosting it in another, and backing up and verifying your data.
An easy and quick tool for this is the Acronis TrueImage 15-day trial
version. Yes, you'll need sufficient space to store the image file, but
you can reduce its size somewhat by deleting the pagefile.sys and
hiberfil.sys files before imaging, and as well removing all content.ie5
folders on that drive. Then empty the recycle bin. After imaging, mount
the image as read-only and browse through it to verify that you can see and
open your data files. And if your efforts don't quite work, you can
restore the image and try again.
If you do manual copies, be sure you locate your email and address files.
These are often not stored in the My Documents structures, but in hidden or
system folders. You don't need to be concerned about this if you image.
Once your data is secure, you can try whatever you can think of.
For example, you might try saving out the registry you have now to a spare
folder, then overwriting it with the default registry as you would from this
page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
You can do this while the drive is hosted in the other system. This will
cause your system to "forget" about all the apps and updates you have
installed. Normally the next step would be to run System Restore, but you
apparently can't do that, so you would need to rerun installs - but you
would at least have a working registry. Check that the default files are
in place before you try this.
However, my preference would be to respect the value of my time, and after
backing up via the image, wipe the drive and do a clean install.
You should try to figure out how to make a reinstall an option.

I'm having errors with my registry keys.
1. I go to start, run, and type in regedit.
2. In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, I can't open .3g2. I get an error that says
Cannot open .3g2: Error while opening key. In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
there
is WELL OVER 50 keys that have the same error in just
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. The key errors are only happening in
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
3. I think that my registry key errors are also preventing me from
downloading and installing common programs such as Adobe Flash
Player, Adobe Reader,Adobe Photoshop, my calculator and Microsoft
Paint are missing, as well as my Microsoft Board Computer games that
are automatically there in games (Backgammon,Checkers, etc..) and on
one computer setting the desktop screen is white and can't be
changed. Of course, I'm just assuming and I could be wrong.
4. What can I do to solve my registry key errors situation?
Re-installation of Windows XP is just not an option right now. Also,
a system restore seems to be out of the question, unless you can
tell
me how to get a date further back, since I don't have any restore
options.
If more information is needed, I will be more than gladly provide
it.
Thanks
