I'm back again-

I have removed the offending patch several times and it keeps getting reinstalled.

When I click on the 'updates are available' icon I always click custom install and remove the check mark for that patch and click on the rest of the boxes to close that window.

Somehow it keeps getting reinstalled.

Any suggestions??

I get the message: This page has an unspecified potential security flaw. Would you like to continue. yes/no.

Why do I get this when I try to open a folder that is EMPTY? (The folder is the temporary internet files.)

Post #16 in this thread suggests it's a flaw in a Patch MS06-045 (KB921398).

The last link above will let you continue the search for other suggestions. I don't know what else you might try..

I read all the Google posts but none addressed the automatic reinstallation.

I guess that I will just have to keep a better eye on the patch list.

Thanks anyway - (mainly thanks for the heads up of the cause of the error [the kb...].)

Actually I meant for you to look past the patch for another solution. But this post suggests a way to keep the patch from reinstalling.. you'd have to adjust accordingly; look for a registry reference to 921398, I guess.

Read that over - lots of good information - thanks.

When the patch IS installed, there should be a registry entry for it.

When I uninstall the patch, there should be NO registry entry for it - right??

Are you saying that I can dummy a registry entry saying the patch IS installed when it really is NOT installed - is that likely to cause any peripheral error/damage to the OS?

Sounds like the dummy WOULD prevent the patch from being installed again - which would cure MY problem.

Comments?

After looking at the files that are updated, I doubt you should try that at all: shell32.dll and xpsp3res.dll You should probably look for another solution, or look for the cause of its re-installation.

That was my feeling too- there is too much interaction between the OS and the registry to 'dummy' something strange into the registry.

The only thing that I can figure is that somehow the checkmark stayed in the download this box when I clicked close.

Thanks again for the clarification.
