Once he replaces the corrupt SYSTEM issue, he will be able to boot into safe mode, perform the necessary fix, and perform a windows system restore. He should be fine if he follows the directions; barring any other issues. I hate this error... It really does suck.

Yeah, that one's a bitch (BTDT), but with a corrupted registry he'll have to
work from the Recovery Console as Windows won't load in any mode. To access
the SVI folder and change permissions will require use of cacls as he won't
be able to load safe mode and access the folder's properties.
