Hi James,
You may want to replace the file as it may be damaged. Delete the one in the dllcache folder first, then expand a new one from the C:\Windows\SerivcePackFile\I386 directory using the "expand file" function in msconfig.

One of our home machines still runs Windows XP and it has recently developed
a problem whereby the filmstrip view of a folder of images shows the icon
preview below, but the string "preview not available" in the space above
where a larger image should be. If one clicks on the "View as a slideshow"
link in the sidebar, the screen turns black with the string "preview not
available" in the middle of it. If you attempt to preview a picture by
double-clicking on it, the screen flashes as if the Picture and Fax Viewer
application appears for a fraction of a second and disappears.
I have researched the problem and, based on what I had learned, I had
figured that the following would fix it:
regsvr32 -u %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll
... which gave me confirmation that the DLL was reregistered, but didn't fix
the problem.
Any ideas?
