Re: Page not available???

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

It should at a minimum have the line:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Sorry, I don't wish to hijack this post but was interested in the thread.
Out of interest, I viewed my Host file as per your instructions and all it
says is this:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2001 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This file has been automatically generated for use by Microsoft Internet
# Connection Sharing. It contains the mappings of IP addresses to host
names
# for the home network. Please do not make changes to the HOSTS.ICS file.
# Any changes may result in a loss of connectivity between machines on the
# local network.
#

Is something missing or must I create a Host file first?

Below is all that should be in the HOSTS file in a fresh install of
Windows, with the last entry being: 127.0.0.1 localhost

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Below are some additional entries that will be in a HOSTS file that has
been modified, these changes will be located below the 127.0.0.1
localhost entry above.

127.0.0.1 clk.atdmt.com #[Ad-Aware.Tracking Cookie]

JS, please give me some details how to check my HOST file using Notepad.
I have no idea what you are talking about and would appreciate more
specific details. Thank you.

Danny has brought up a good point as I also use this technique to block
ads.
You can check the contents of your HOST file at the path shown below by
opening it with Notepad.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

A clean 'as installed' HOST file will have only one entry: 127.0.0.1
localhost
Any additional entries are most likely the cause of the page note found
issue.

It sounds like you are using a program that has added as servers to
your
"HOSTS" file. Most likely a program such as SpyBot Search and
Destroy.

By adding the web address to the hosts file and telling it that the
address is 127.0.0.1 it will look on your computer to find them.
Since
it
can't find them on your computer you get the "Page Not Found" error.

This is a good thing and not a bad thing, unless you want to see and
be
bombarded with ads.

You may have some kind of Ad blocking software or it's an option in
your
AV software.

Using a Dell running XP Pro. I have noticed that when I visit
various
web
sites I never see ads and banners. The ads and banners always have a
message
that says "Page not available". I just checked my Hotmail acct, once
in
my
inbox there was a banner at the top and an ad at the side - both of
them
had
the "Page not available" message in them. What would cause this and
how
can
it be fixed? All help appreciated. Thank you.
