Unusual Network problem

Up until my hard drive crashed, my network was working perfectly. Upon replacing the hard drive, and reinstalling all of the software, the network began to be funky. Computer 1 couldn't see or talk to computer 2, but computer 2 could see and share files that were on computer 1.

Almost immediately, the hard drive (a brand new one) crapped out. At the same time, the mother board was replaced, and the hard drive had to have all of the software reinstalled again. The problem isn't quite as bad now, but almost. Computer 1 can now see that computer 2 exisists, though it can't ping it, while computer 2 can still see and use computer 1 as a server.

Computer 1 is XP Pro, while computer 2 is XP Home. Both machines have MacAfee personal firewall. Both machines can connect to the internet. Computer 1, while it can't ping computer 2 can ping itself, the router, and sites on the internet. Now that I can at least see computer 2 from computer 1, when I click on it, while viewing my network places, I get the following error message: "\\Computer2 is not accessible. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." Then below that, on a seperate line, is: "The network path was not found."

So Far I've tried:

1) Turning off firewall (both MacAfee and XP's) on both machines.

2) Using Computer 1 to generate a new network setup which I've run on computer2 (changing the network name).

3) Switching the ports on the router.

4) Confirmed that all necessary network components (software) are there, such as "Client of Microsoft Networks"; "File and Sharing for Microsoft Networks"; and "Internet Protecol (tcp/ip)" are installed on both computers.

5) Confirmed that "File and Printer Sharing" is turned on both computers and for all hard drives on each machine, with the "Allow network users to change my files" box checked. Even turned it off, and then back on.

6) Even tried new network cables.

7) Redid network setup (with different network names) on both computers several times.

8) Originally, it was setup to pick up the IP address automatically. So I tried hard coding the two machines, putting in the correct "IP address", "Subnet Mask", and "Default Gateway". I also tried hard coding the DNS servers.

I am at my wits end. A supposed expert said, "Well just go out an buy another copy of XP Pro. That will fix your problem 'for sure'." While I might not be as experienced as him, somehow I don't think that that's the problem.

Any all suggestions are welcome, and I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and offer your help.
