Corrupted Optical Mouse

Over the past few weeks, I've had more and more problems using a mouse
with Windows XP w/SP2.

Doesn't matter if it's connected by PS2 or USB, it's to the point now
that about 3-5 times per MINUTE, the power to the mouse fails and the
optical red light goes off. With PS2 it usually comes back 5-7 seconds
later. But with the USB, I often have to disconnect the cable and then
reconnect it. If not that, Windows XP thinks the mouse is being
disconnected/connected over and over again, and I get those annoying
beeps you normally hear when messing with a plug-and-play USB
connection.

It's NOT the mouse either. I've now tried FOUR of them (all optical)
and each and every one has the same problem.

This problem gets worse by the day.

WindowsXP or a hardware (motherboard) problem?
