OK, I think I've solved the problem ... without (as usual) knowing what caused it in the first place:

Thanks to another thread, I was reminded that I had a month-old ERUNT registry backup. I was able to roll back to that one and VOILA - System Registry is now working fine, plus I have my Volume control back. Further proof that ERUNT is way better than System Restore!

What might have caused the problem? Perhaps a little program called Cyberhawk, which I'd recently installed ... but no proof either way.

Anyway, thanks - Bert - for the help and the great website.

Hi Peter,

Have you tried running System Restore in Safe Mode?

1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with a command prompt.

2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.

3. In Safe Mode type or paste the following command in the Start - Run box then press Enter. In Safe Mode Command Prompt type the following command then press ENTER.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state, or undo the last restore if available.

When I click on System Restore in XPPro, a blank "System Restore" screen
briefly flashes and then disappears.

I think I've tried everything that Bert Kinney suggests at his very helpful
site ( http://bertk.mvps.org ): I have SP2 loaded, SR is enabled, there's
plenty of disk space, Task Manager etc seem to be running. And I know I've
been able to use it in the past.

Any ideas?

Note to self: make ERUNT backups more frequently.
