You could try removing the External Drive and start over.

Let me start by stating that I am using Windows XP Pro SP2. All of my
drives
had specific letter designations, which several of my programs were linked
to. I made a mistake and did not have all my drives connected when I
added a
new external device and it assumed one of my other drives names. In
short,
how do I rename my drives so they are back to where they were? I tried a
right click on the drive and went to "rename", but it wouldn't let me
change
the letter designation.

You might want to consider putting the cd drives at the end. I have an
external dvd writer and two internal, assigned x,y,z.
Do simila for things like flash drives so you always get same letter.
Back in dos days doing this would have incurred a penalty, but not to
worry with xp.
