Networking a 3G Dtatcard

Sorry if I am slightly off-topic (can't find a better place to post), but can somebody explain how to wirelessly network a 3G datacard (before I take the plunge and buy one).
I guess I plug the card into one laptop. Presumably my wireless router then plugs into the same laptop's LAN slot?
Then what?
Once I have the router "live", I guess my other computer will find the network as it does with my current set-up.
