It was an OEM unit ... WAS as in many items have been replaced. It
originally was a SONY VAIO. I went the ASUS site and it is full of
warnings that they sell their BIOS to manufacturers and that they may
have been altered by the end user.

This problem came about after installing a new HD and doing a clean
install of XP Home. At the same time I added a PCI board to add
additional USB 2.0 ports.

Thinking that maybe the new PCI board caused the problem I have tried
a few times to re-install the software/drivers that came with the PCI
board.

Also, my PC seems to operating perfectly since the rebuild (2 weeks so
far).

So, should I leave well enough alone, and if not, should I reload the
original chipset software from Sony?

Well if everything is working except that you have the Unknown Device, I
think I'd leave it alone. You have to make that decision for yourself.
