I am able to get logged in through SafeMode on the problem machine.
I have verified, deleted, rekeyed the userinit.exe seting inthe registry.
But I am still not able to break the loop.
I did a Install/Repair...no change to behavior. I just want to get my data
off and Im gonna low level format and reinstall. How can i get data off in
safemode??????
When you say "looping" I assume you mean this:
- You enter your logon credentials.
- Windows attempts to log on.
- Windows returns you to the logon screen.
If so then you need to check several things while in Safe Mode:
- Does userinit.exe exist in the System32 folder?
- Is it of the correct size? (24,576 bytes)
- Is your system drive letter still C:?
- Does HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Winlogon/Userinit
point at c:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe?
There are several methods to retrieve data off your disk.
One is to start the machine in Safe Mode + Networking
and copy the data to a networked machine. Another is to
copy it to a spare disk while in Safe Mode.
This would be a good time to think about the merits of
backing up your important files regularly (e.g. once a
week) to an independent medium, e.g. a 2.5" disk in an
external USB case. Next time you might lose the lot . . .
