Microcsoft support saved my ass.
1. Gave me a more powerful virus scrubber, which I ran, and which
cleaned up a few things.
2. Let me download a program that added by firewall back to my
registry.
3. When my PC restarted, all was OK. Firewall was challenging the
Comcast program that checks my network connection, and the firewall had
returned to the registry, and to the Control Panel.
4. Stay away from www.automaticbikini.com. That is where I got it.
5. Someone pointed out to me that NAV 2004 with all updates (which is
what I have) is not enough. Get NAV 2006. I went to their web site
and I see that they have NAV 2007 already. I will be buying and
installing that shortly.
Yes - it is BETA software - but very useful and well tested.
(Don't know what "BETA" means? In simplest terms, it is the stage of a
softwares' life where it is tested for bugs, crashes, errors,
inconsistencies, and any other problems.)
I work for IBM. But I do make, sed, grep, awk, threads, sockets, etc.
I have to admit that PCs don't interest me much. I am more of a UNIX
person.
I always remove the Internet history stuff when I am finished with IE.
I run ad-adaware
everytime I use my computer, just before I turn it off, and I keep it
updated. I also run spy-bot, but the upgrades for spy-bot often have
checksum errors and won't download.
I always do the MS upgrades, so I assume that IE and the firewall are
upgraded accordingly. This includes Service Pak 2. I do automatic
upgrades for NAV, too.
I frequently backup my files onto CD.

Thanks for the advice. Fortunately, I was already doing a lot of it.

I suggest you stay away from NAV. There are better, less resource hogging AV programs including several that are free.
