If you have a genuine Product Key for the same version
of Windows XP as the non-genuine version. For example, if
you have a non-genuine version of Windows XP Professional
installed, and have a "genuine" Product Key for Windows XP
Professional, you can use the Windows Product Key Update
Tool to change the Product Key.
The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for
users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key
to a genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall!

However, if you have a "genuine" Product Key for Windows XP
Home Edition, and you have a non-genuine Windows XP Professional
installation, the Tool will not work....a "clean install" of XP Home
would be required.

| One of my kids, at college, re-installed his OEM XP Pro with a friend's
| copy. It's at SP2. It's now flagging as probably pirated.
|
| I've got a legal, FPP, in the box, original issue XP Pro (no SP), that
| once ran on my machine but has not been used for more than a year. (I
| demo'd the machine, MB to recylcing center, drives to USB externals to
| backup data, RAM to desk drawer.)
|
| Can I use my XP to make his legal? If so, will it wipe out his
| existing files? If not, any other information I need?
|
| Thanks very much.
