Yes, and only one type resembles connectors used with a standard phone line.
Ethernet.
One type that doesn't require a crossover is Firewire. There's two
different type cable and ports for Firewire. One is 4 wire, the other is 6
wire. When connecting such PCs/laptops, but sure to get the cable with the
proper connection type on both ends. Not suggested for home LANs connecting
PCs/laptops in different rooms. Length of the cable is limited to 6 feet.
Suggested only for close quarter connections such as moving a laptop to the
same room as a PC for temporary data downloads/uploads.

There are "several" types of cross-over cables.
Ethernet
Serial
USB
The common one use is Ethernet. You use the exact same cable plus and
wire
that you use for regular Ethernet cables. There is only 4 wires (2 pair)
that
are "crossed" to allow the sending signals to be received by the correct
Ethernet pin.
You can normally buy an Ethernet cross-over cable at most computer stores
or
Staples. They might be known as "cross-over" patch cables/cords.
