Add/Removal tool Freezes

I restored a system back to it's original state and all seemed fine. I
updated all the Microsoft software using the on-line updates (55 of
them). The original was XP Media Center SP2. After the update and
reboot I wanted to remove the promo applications--Norton and Office
Set-Up, ect.....
When I chose the removeal of a program the screen started the process
but froze. The hour glass just sat there and everything was locked up.
I could not click on anything, such as another tab or the start menu.
I tried alt+ctr+del. The task manager opened but choosing any option,
the system remained locked up.....

Next I tried to install Office 2003 from disk...same thing happened.
It opened the disk and asked which program in Office I wanted to
install. I chose one and it froze there.........

Any help out there?? I would be grateful!!!
