My warning in my post of Sun 3 Sep 2006 14:09:40 GMT can be removed, after I
just made the tests. So my REG file does work reliably where it is intended
so (i.e. in Windows XP SP2 fully updated, currently around IE 6.0.2900.2180,
OE 6.00.2900.2180, depending on language, Home or Pro, ...). Here are the
details.
--ooOOoo--
My REG file works, either with the trailing blank line (in facts 2 "CR"s),
or without (just one Carriage Return), or with nothing after the last "0" in
"...dword:00000000" (thus zero "CR").
Which confirms that, as anyone could guess, the "argument" from Frank
Saunders (MS-MVP OE) to help himself and Ramesh (MS-MVP) stealing my file,
was simply that, an "argument" for theft, that himself obviously didn't
believe.
--ooOOoo--
BTW, in W2K US full updated to 18 Sep 2006 (thus SP4, IE 6.00.2800.1106, OE
6.00.2800.1807), the OE registry key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{guid}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0]
doesn't contain the "Compact Check Count" value at all, and OE when closing,
doesn't propose Compaction. So, this massive data loss ordered by OE
(through a Compaction at closing that most often will be interrupted), is
apparently one more aggravation of the security brought in WXP by its SP2 -
and one more instance where WXP SP2 is a backstep from W2K, in general
efficiency, and particularly in security - while *in name of Security*! Too
bad that MS people (from managers to "volunteers") are arrogant and stubborn
to the point of not recognize this blunder and correct it.
Also notice in W2K that the line "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" is
unchanged, then it's better IMO to not follow Frank Saunders' Sat 2 Sep 2006
09:50:06 GMT suggestion of changing it into "REGEDIT4".

Here is the resulting advice:
To prevent data losses in OE, the 1st thing to do is to prevent
OE from forcing compaction against your will. For this, just
periodically reset to zero the "Compact Check Count" in
Registry.
To do that conveniently:
(Warning: this must be working and harmless, but the testing
I intent to do hasn't been done yet):
1) open a New Text document, name it "OE_No-Compact.reg"
2) fill it with the following contents (without the 2 fences
marked with "=" signs, but with the final blank line):
===== OE_No-Compact.reg BEG =====
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{guid}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0]
"Compact Check Count"=dword:00000000
===== OE_No-Compact.reg END =====
3) replace "guid" with the actual number you find in the
relevant place in the registry
4) save the file
5) Double-click that file
Redo (5) once a month (or accordingly to your use), so to
prevent that "CCC" (Compact Check Count) from approaching 100
(it grows by 1 each time OE closes).

I keep in my records that you are allowing anyone to take a file
from you and, if he finds a character that he can harmlessly
change (for instance adding a blank line), even if not
apparently useful ("I don't know why we put a blank line at the
end"), then he can omit to cite you, and present himself as the
only author instead.
This surprised me about you.

MS "volunteers" seem to be in a bad case of NIHS
(Not Invented Here Syndrom).
2)
« Note that both mine and Ramesh' have a blank line at the end.

Thanks for these 2 infos, very useful to me:
- I hadn't noticed the blank line at end;
- learning that there is a choice for "Merge" makes me
more comfortable executing that file of mine (even if
some risk remain anyway given experience...).

This one should work, although with the one Ramesh gave
it would be more specifically for WinXP:
Save the parts between the lines as compactCount.reg
------------------------------------------------------------------------
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0]
"Compact Check Count"=dword:00000000
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note that both mine and Ramesh' have a blank line at the end.
Close OE, right click compactCount.reg and choose Merge.
Also note that with the updates for OE that you have the
Compact Check Count will be set to zero every time you do a
File | Folder | Compact All.

I mean, I have cleaned the 47KB "OE_No-Compact.reg" file, so its
size and contents are now just 374 bytes and:
--- OE_No-Compact.reg BEG ---
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{guid}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0]
"Compact Check Count"=dword:00000000
--- OE_No-Compact.reg END ---
Can I safely double-click that "OE_No-Compact.reg" file each
time I want to reset the "Compact Check Count" to zero, and
remain sure that this will alter nothing else in the OE key?

Thanks for this very useful fix.
Maybe you could help me for another one:
In "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\
Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0",
I want to reset the "Compact Check Count" to zero, with just
double-clicking a file.
Unfortunately with a REG file I know how to change a whole key,
not a single value. Maybe by just removing al but the said value
in the key? But for acting in Registry, I prefer asking than
trying.
If you could show me how to build the file for "Compact Check
Count", it would greatly help me (for this example and later
ones).

Subject: XP And My Mouse
Group,
I have XP Home and my mouse act a bit funny. When I
double-click a folder, instead of opening the folder, I get the
Serarch Results box which is what I would use if I wanted to
fine a file or folder. But if I right-click and select Open,
the folder opens. What do I do to correct this. I went to the
Logitech driver and could not find a reasonable setting that
makes this happen. Your thoughts on fixing this problem.
