Re: new cpu installed, need to reinstall XP??

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Believe you're interpreting "cpu" as the entire computer, which is what I
interpret from your response. In this thread, "cpu" is using the literal
term instead. The cpu is a very complicated chip for data processing in
simple terms. Its inside the computer case and resides on the motherboard.

The only time I can see what you say happening is if someone replaced a cpu
chip with a cpu with HT technology and enabled HT in the bios. The HAL is
slightly different as a result to utilize HT. There were few motherboard
makers that made these that could utilize both old and the newer (now old)
techs. In this case, its doubtful. But can't be dismissed as the OP failed
to relay that data.

Feel free to contribute. Sometimes, a filter person like myself is needed
to clarify to others.

I would definitely run a 'repair' from the xp cd. It will load files that
new
cpu might need. Boot from the CD and do the second repair you come to -
not
the first one. You will not loose any programs you have installed and it
will
refresh windows xp for you to work with the new hardware.

If you did not get a CD with the cpu then you need to go to the cpu mfr's
web site and see if you need to download any drivers for that cpu for xp.
That is very important. Also - if you received a CD with the cpu you may
need
to check hte mfrs web site for updates to the drivers on the CD.
