1. http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html

2. Scroll to the bottom of that web page and Download 32-bit versions of
NT/2K/XP/Server 2003

3. Save the download to a location that you will know where to get it

4. After download, browse to the location of where you saved filemon

5. Right click on the filemon.zip and choose Extract All...

6 Select next (defaults) and next again, which should unzip the folder into
the same place you downloaded filemon

7. Open the filemonNT folder and open Filemon.exe

8. By default it will start monitoring all activity of the files accessed in
xp as you should see

9. Open your Display Properties (where you choose your different
backgrounds) which can be access in the Control Panel under "Display" (or
right click anywhere but an icon or taskbar on the desktop and choose
"Properties")

10. Select the Desktop Tab at the tob of the Display Properties Window

11. With filemon.exe running already, inside of the Display Properties
window select each one of the backgrounds that you need recovered

12. Filmon will log the queries to the backgrounds
13. Go into filemon which is alread open and push CTRL+E on your keyboard
which will stop filemon from activly monitoring file activity

14. You can now scroll up through the list and find the entries that say for
Example: "10:52:05 AM rundll32.exe QUERY INFORMATION
C:\Backgrounds\mybackground.jpg SUCCESS Length:"

15. You should be able to locate the background now by browsing to the
location of the picture file that it specified which in my case was:
C:\Backgrounds\mybackground.jpg.

16. You should be able to copy this file now

I hope this makes a little bit of sense anyway

I very much appreciate this info if it will help me copy those picks to my
pic folder but i am not very computer literate. I do follow directions well
so if you would please share with me how to do what you have said i would be
very pleased.

Thnx.

Sorry my last post was for backgrounds that you save directly out of internet
explorer.

You can use filemon from sysinternals and go into your desktop backgrounds
in display properties, click each picture you want to save while running
filemon in the background. Filemon will show a Query as to the path of where
the picture is located if you scroll through filemon for it. Kind of a long
way of doing it but I tested it on my end and was able to see where my custom
backgrounds were.

Probably in your "My Pictures" folder then. Otherwise WinKey+F and type
in the filename.

Where are desktop pictures stored in Windows XP & how do I get there?

Try news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

Why? He's not asking about Vista.
