Recently I have noticed a low key, single note sound almost like a
knock being produced by my XP Pro system just before it shuts down and
accompanying Microsoft shut-down jingle kicks in.
I have run my anti-virus software (avast) also spybot and adaware and
all looks clean and healthy.
Should I be worried by this disconcerting thudding sound or has my PC
paranoia reached new levels.
This doesn't sound like a software problem. It sounds like a fan that is
possibly going. Unplug the machine and open your computer case (if you
have a desktop) and clean out all dust bunnies. Use compressed air to
blow out all the dust. I usually do this outside on the back porch!
Once the machine is clean inside, plug it back in but leave the case
open. Start the computer and carefully observe all the fans, including
the one on the video card if present.
Try and isolate where the sound is coming from and if it is coming from
a fan, replace that fan.
If you are uncomfortable opening your case and doing this - and there is
no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to
a professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA).
