Long shot, but are you on a network? If so, do you have any connections open
to other computers' shared folders? If you leave the computer in this
'frozen' state, and wait a bit, does anything happen at all?

If so, go to start | run, type
cmd
<enter>

and type
net use
<enter>

If you see any connections to unavailable resources, you can delete them -

net use <connection name or drive letter> /del
<enter>

If this doesn't help, post back with more detail including when this stopped
working, and whatever you think may have happened just before then. And you
might look at your event logs, too.
