after starting windows, it loads, and before it shows your usernames, the

mistake is that i reinstall windows into the windows folder, which erases all
users and userfiles. how can i recover the lost user data?

You probably are using a "System Recovery" disk (or partition)
provided by your computer manufacturer. If you have an actual
Windows XP Installation CD then doing a Repair Install as per the
instructions at http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
will preserve your user data files and installed applications. Al
that needs to be reinstalled are Windows updates.

Hope this is of some assistance.

Good luck
