Windows XP overrides any BIOS control of IRQ mappings, so
there isn't a way to manually assign them without disabling ACPI
and that isn't an advisable thing to do and would likely make things
worse.

All I can recommend is that you disable any on-board peripherals
such as Firewire, Serial, Parallel that isn't used to lower the IRQ
requirements on the PC. I would also check and see how many
revisions down your BIOS firmware is from the latest available. I
would read the change log and see if any mention is made of USB
or IRQ issues fixed by a specific update.

Some HP/Compaq PCs have some unusual sub-system configurations
so it's difficult to give you more specific advise.

I have installed the environment variable (after I posted I looked around
and thought that that might be the way, but I was not sure).

There are no greyed out USB entries.

The only PCI card added to the machine is the video card (NVidia GeForce
6200SE TurboCache) supplied by Compaq/HP with the PC. The USBs, Firewires,
Network, Memory Card Readers, etc are 'on the case'. I did remove the
original modem from the PC as I was connecting to the net through my
network.

Any suggestions? Can I redirect the USB controller (USB-1) to another IRQ?
17 looks clear. If so, how can I do that?

That all sounds great. I have reactivated the enhanced controller and

MSinfo32. It came up with two USB controllers using IRQ 23.
The first was:

You talk about 'posting back' the first device. How do I do that?

Sounds extremely useful. Again how do I do that?

My PC has been freezing up increasingly over the past few weeks. I
have
checked the hardware, temperatures, etc and all seems OK. I have
been
through
all the startup files and cleaned out any rubbish. I have reduced

XP
bits
and pieces taking memory resources. None of these seem to have made

The PC operates OK when booted in safe mode.

Therefore, I have disabled all the devices (one by one) in Device
Manager.

I have 5 original USB2 ports in the PC (Compaq desktop with Pentium

I disable one of the USB controllers (the enhanced one) all the
problems

away. BUT all the USBs revert to 1.1 - this makes backups a little
slow!!!
Trying to update the driver tells me that there is no newer driver
available.

Today I deleted the USB controller drivers in Device Manager (Safe
Mode)
and
rebooted to reinstall the drivers. The problem came back!!!

Can anyone help me? I am moving home in 12 days and want to sort it
before
then if I can as I will be without broadband for a little while.....
