Windows Explorer doesn't recognize USB memory card reader

Just got a Sandisk 12-in-1 memory card reader. Each of 4 slots gets a
different drive number assigned. I can manually enter the drive number in
the address window and then that drive will show up. I am running XP home.
A guy at work has one (on a Win2000 box) and Explorer shows all 4 drives
whether there's a memory card in a slot or not. Is there a setting I need
to change? I've noticed the same thing when I plug in a USB memory stick.
I'm plugging into an auxiliary USB port on my monitor (which is plugged into
the computer's USB port). Would that make a difference?

Thanks.
