It takes the Windows Update site about 6 minutes just to do what it does before
it shows what updates are available while on dial-up, maybe 3 minutes on DSL
(when M$ Office is installed too).
For instance, you download .NET Framework 1.1, then you download the SP1 of it,
then there is a patch for that. That is 18 minutes of waiting for Windows Update
to scan your computer for 3 updates, on top of the hours of downloading the
updates on dial up.
The dial up machine I've been working on this week has had just over 100 updates
added to it this year (not all by me though).
Dial up and Windows Update is total BS, avoid it with a vengeance.
