I think I'm at a point that I need to do a clean install of XP.
Because I have so much data
on the HDD and really do not want to go through it file by file to save
to a CD, I've purchased
an extenal 40GD USB HDD.

My plan is this: to copy over as much as I can and then after
reinstalling XP and all the
applications, to go and "pull across" the data files I want, i.e. MS
Outlook's address book, MS Word .doc's, photos, graphic files I've
created in PrintMaster, etc....

Any thoughts on how to go about this? Is my "thinking" reasonable?

Thanks in advance.

You can use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP to
backup your user data. See the article Files and Settings Transfer
Wizard by MVP Gary Woodruff: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm

The way I normally do this is to create a folder named \Transfer on
the backup drive and tell FASTW to save its data file there.

Before you do this you should clean up your computer a bit by dumping
the TEMP and Temporary Internet Files.

Good luck
