admiral,
Long post!
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents will work also if you only have
one drive and it is C:
Type into the Run command and see what opens:
system32
system
fonts
tasks
control
control folders
main.cpl
main.cpl @1
desk.cpl
sysdm.cpl
eventvwr
sendto
favorites
windows
%userprofile%
%allusersprofile%
%programfiles%
There are *lots* more.
You can open almost anything with the Run command.
Start | Run | Type: . | Click OK opens %userprofile%
Start | Run | Type: .. | Click OK opens C:\Documents and Settings
Start | Run | Type: ... | Click OK opens My Computer
Start | Run | Type: \ | Click OK opens C:\ or the root folder
To start a program by using the Run command
1. Click Start and then click Run.
2. In Open, type the path to the item you want to open, or click Browse to
locate it.
Notes
* The Open box lists items you have opened recently. Type or select an item
in the list, and then click OK to open it.
* You can open a file or folder or connect to a shared computer by typing
its path in the Open box. You can also connect to an Internet or intranet
site; for example, to reach the Microsoft Web site, type
www.microsoft.com in the Open box. ]]

To create a shortcut, you can drag Run from the XP Start Menu to the Desktop
or Quick Launch.
You cannot drag Run from the Classic Start Menu to anywhere. You have to
have the XP Start Menu in order to drag Run to the Desktop or Quick Launch.
Same for Help and Support, Search, Settings.
Is it normal for this Document folder to be invisible in Explorer but
only to be revealed when the path :-
Yes.
For example, paste this into Start | Run:
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
Then try to find Content.IE5 using Windows Explorer.
I do not beleive that Shared Documents is a Hidden folder, but maybe yours
is.
Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents using the Run
command.
Paste this into Start | Run:
%allusersprofile%\Documents
Click the folders icon.
Right click Shared Documents and click Properties.
On the General tab, make sure that Hidden is NOT checked.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Thanks for the reply - your instructions found the photos OK for which
I'm duly grateful.
However , please see my comments below.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents is the path for Shared
Documents.
Fair enough - if you say so - the only problem with that is that ,
until you told me to enter the string below into Start | Run , I could
not find the Folder " Documents" mentioned at the end of that path.
I have never used Start | Run to enter paths to Folders before nor did
I realise you could do this.
I have always had XP set in the "Classic" view and used only Windows
Explorer to find Files and Folders.
If I use Explorer , ( with " Show Hidden Files & Folders" checked in
Tools | Folder Options | View" ) and navigate to :-
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ - there is no Document Folder
shown ! = hence my puzzlement.
Is it normal for this Document folder to be invisible in Explorer but
only to be revealed when the path :-
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents" is entered in the RUN
box ?
Perhaps I should make some setting change to enable this path to be
seen in Explorer ? - if so , I'd be grateful to know what it is.
Paste...
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
into Start | Run and Click OK.
Click on the Folders icon on the Toolbar.
Shared documents will be highlighted in the left hand pane.
Shared Music, Shared Pictures and Shared Video will be in the right hand
pane.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music is Shared Music.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures is Shared
Pictures.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Videos is Shared Video.
