No Multimedia Option In Add Programs?

While I have audible sound, what started this whole merry go round for me was I
couldn't (and can't) get my microphone to work. I started looking around and
there's no multimedia options in my Start > All Programs > Accessories menu.
The Entertainment folder appears to be empty. Clicking on Add/Remove Programs
in the control panel and then selecting Windows Components doesn't show a
multimedia option of any sort. Can't find the sound recorder executable file
sndrec32.exe anywhere either...
I'm running a legit copy of Win XP Pro SP2 with all current updates. Something
obviously got smoked in the past but I can't say when. I didn't have a need for
the recording capability until recently. And like I said, it plays sounds just
fine... I just can't record new ones or get any sort of reaction from the
microphone.
There are no speech engines installed that I can see either, if that matters.
The computer doesn't seem to have any hardware problems except for the dead
microphone. I'm using the sound capabilities
