one symptom of slow boot is too much garbage in the prefetch folder.
delete the contents of the prefetch folder and reboot.
\windows\prefetch

just the contents not the folder.
none destructive as windows immediately begins to build it again.

news:Xns981C9DB2FAA86parcxmannetscapenet@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I know this
is a very common problem, and I can usually solve it, but this one's
got me stumpped.

The patient is my daughter's Inspiron 8600, running XP Home. The
problem is slow boot up. This began last week. Nothing new has been
installed.

The Dell splash screen appears and lasts for about a second or so,
which is
fine.

Then the Windows XP scroll starts and lasts for at least 30 scrolls,
or about 70 seconds. During the last few scrolls, the scrolls
hesitate and restart across the screen. Finally, the Welcome screen
appears, but that also takes a long time to complete. The desktop
appears, but if I press the Start menu or try to do anything like
launch IE from the taskbar, nothing happens. Apparently, something
else is going on in the background.
In about 30 seconds the Start menu expands or IE will launch, from
when I tried to get them to start 30 seconds prior.

I ran AdAware and SpyBot S&D and found nothing suspicious. I also
disabled
many programs that were scheduled to start up in msconfig Start Up
tab. I
also defragged the hard drive. The hard drive is 40GB with 22 GB
free. No change in start up speed.

I ran HijackThis (I know how to interpret), but found nothing
suspicous.

What is going on between the Dell splash screen and the Windows XP
scroll?
I've passed the MBR at this point, right? In other words, this isn't
a MBR
problem, is it?

Any ideas? I hate to have to do a reinstall.

Thanks

Deleted prefetch files. There were 132 files there. First reboot
started faster, but subsequent reboots back to abnormal. Only 40
prefetch files now. Back to square one.

Thanks
