Re: Black Tuesday Update Mess

I have one machine with Pro and the other two machines have Home. I recently
downloaded the Tuesday updates, there were 9 of them, and since then have had
no trouble whatsoever.

Hello All
I don't call update Tuesday 'Black Tuesday' for nothing.
Seven hours ago I decided that I had better download the latest offerings
from MS
KB's, 914388, 916595, & 917159
Before doing so I check with the web based MS Update discussion group,
there being no update newsgroup.
My God, I could not believe the problems that some were having, but
nearly all of these seemed to generate around Servers etc.
Being not on a server, I decided to go ahead.
That took care of the first couple of hours.
I then download the three, one at a time, rebooted and used the computer
to see if there were adverse effects for 15 to 30 minutes after each
boot.
5 hours later I was pretty pleased with myself - I had got away with the
downloads.
I switched off the computer.
Two hours ago I switched on - half the system tray icons didn't show and
my antivirus refused to start. OE & IE would not open either.
Disconnected the modem - switched off the comp - which took at least 15
minutes to save the settings and close - then I again rebooted.
Again the task bar didn't fill. Did Task Manager which took an age to
show - in there were 5 'dumprep.exe' and 2 wuauclt.exe(windows update)
using all the CPU(Idle was 0%)
I know that dumprep is the error reporting dump tool but at that time I
could not even get into search to find out what the 'exe' one was, as TM
just froze - couldn't end any applics - nothing.
I had to keep pulling the plug to switch off.
Each time I switched on the same happened - I also saw in TM there were 5
svchost.exe(generic host processes) - I have noticed one or two before
but not five!
Each time I switched on I promised myself I would delete all three
updates and do a System Restore but could not get into either.
After pulling the plug half a dozen times, everything loaded as normal,
as if nothing had happened.
I enabled antivirus and scanned the system with everything I have -
nothing showed.
I cannot explain what or how this all happened - but it scared the XXXX
out of me.
Does anyone have any ideas.

P.S
Recently, in these groups, somebody said something like ' the problems
caused by updates were not as great as the problems caused by not
downloading updates' ?

I also installed these updates on Tuesday onto both of my computers. They
installed quickly without incident. I haven't had any problem with either
computer since the installation. One of the computers is running XP Pro
and the other is running XP MCE.
Jim

Good to hear that as I did see a couple of posters in the web group with XP
Pro and they had identical problems to the majority of the server 2003 lot.
I could not see an XP Home problem.
