Computer going into standby

I just did a clean reinstall of xp pro...during the installation,
several times, and after the installation, the computer goes into
standby. It is set up as to run as a desktop and all the power
management settings are set so that the computer never goes into
standby. This usually happens when either there is a lot of cpu
activity, or a lot of hard drive activity (like when i'm installing
something).
The first time the computer restarted after installing XP, I got a STOP
error informing me that windows shut down to prevent damage to my
computer.
My specs are as follows:
Mobo ABIT KV7
CPU AMD Sempron 1.7ghz
Memory 512mb Mushkin DDR400
Video Card ATI RAGE 128 pro
Operating System win xp pro sp2
my system is set to shutdown when temerature reaches 85 c and is set to
"warning" when it reaches 70 c.
The bios setup utility says the cpu is running at 51 c
If there is any other information you might need to know please tell me
