Cannot run Virus Scan in Safe Mode?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I went to Safe Mode to do a virus scan. A popup box came up with this: No
network device was found, or there is a conflict with existing anti virus or
security software. Only the Virus Scan, Spyware Scan, and Security will be
available. To enable full product functionability uninstall conflict
software or connect to a network and restart the program. Consult the
online Help > Problem Solving section for instructions. Only choice was OK
so I clicked that & another popup box came up with this: Unable to read the
configuration, ..........(error=7413-238, hr=0X8007043C) The virus scanner
would not work.
Where to go? What to do now? I am not computer savy enough to understand
this. I have PC cillin Internet Security 2006 current & up to date.
Spybot & Ad AwareSE scans run fine, both are current & up to date. Windows
XP SP2 current with all updates. Help understanding this appreciated. I
do not know where to start. Problem I am having is a hang up of a couple of
minutes at the Boot window on a emachine before computer goes ahead & loads.
Thanks,
Marsha
