I use WinXP Home. Recently my Desktop computer has frequently frozen or totally blacked out in a variety of situations in a variety of programs. It reboots OK.
I bought a Laptop to replace it, but before I take the Desktop to the computer graveyard, I wonder if the above problems are a sign of HD or total system failure, or whether there is a chance for worthwhile maintenance.

Open the desktop computer and give the internals a good and
thorough cleaning/vacuuming, especially removing dust and lint
from the heatsink fins and fan. Next, check the rotation and
cleaniless of all other intake and exhaust fans. Reseat all
memory cards, peripheral cards and connectors. If problems in
the desktop continue to persist, monitor the CPU temperature.
If running high, then renew the thermal conductor between the
CPU and the heatsink. Otherwise, the PSU might have also aged.
If worthwhile replacing any components, check costs and decide
whether or not it is still worth salvaging the desktop.
