Re: totally clueless & so is tech. support. HELP! PLEASE!

Okay, by all means download the new AV and save to disk, also save any free
user key you may get in a notepad file (copy and paste?) so that you can
reinstall later if you ever need to without going through the registration
page again :) I'm thinking of AVG here but may apply to most of them. I
generally always save to disk first into a folder I call Archives with a
subfolder for the product, then if I have to rebuild anything it's mostly
already on the machine.

Norton will often uninstall but fail to put the proper settings back as it
found them, I strongly suggest you uninstall it BEFORE calling tech support
and then check your Outlook Express server settings against those which are
working for Outlook. As advised question the "Port" settings because that
should no way be port zero.

If you opt for AVG I strongly suggest you do NOT install the email scanning
part because ALL Antivirus email scanning is prone to breaking Outlook
Express. It adds no real protection to the system but is well known and
documented as causing mayhem.

Email scanning works by installing a dummy server on your own machine so
Outlook Express is diverted to there instead of your ISP's mail server. The
dummy or "Proxy" server then forwards OE's requests to the mail server and
scans the replies looking for viral signatures. If this scanning take
unusually long, OE loses patience and files get corrupted. It's kinda like
you calling me and me calling your voice mail so that I can filter out any
swear words :)

You are in no great danger of getting a virus without any AV system running
for a short time provided you only visit known good websites and are
sensible with email and I strongly suggest you uninstall Norton before
attempting AVG, if you fell any happier disconnecting from the internet by
all means do so, but after reconnecting you should get AVG updates and then
see where you are.

Once again I sympathize with the hoops you are having to jump through but if
Outlook is working then it should not be a system problem, more likely a
setting problem.

ONE MORE THING I FORGOT TO MENTION: When I was on the phone last night
with
HP, they told me to disable all Norton which I did and oe still didn't
work.
When I first started using this computer on Friday, I had to disable
Norton's firewall in order to use ie without the problems it was causing
and
switched to windows firewall. That took care of those problems in ie.

I'll be calling my ISP (msn) today and if I have the patiences to wait
while
they keep transferring me here, there, everywhere and keeping me on hold
forever, I'll try to get connected to oe professional........big laugh but
I'm going to try......

Brand new computer-out of the box on Friday. Am not able to send/receive
in
outlook express. All my folders were downloaded, all my newsgroups
applied,
etc. Tech support at msn, tech support at HP (manufacturer) are all
stumped
and have given me the run-a-round. Norton Security had to be reinstalled
3
times before I was able to get other programs to work but nothing has
remedied this problem with oe. I've got the account information set up
right
so what could I possibly do to enable the program to send/receive emails?
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE....if there's someone out there that can guide me,
I'm
hoping to get some direction as everyone who was supposed to know how to
help
has done nothing but add to my aggravation.
