Internet/Secure page access problem?

When I try to access certain websites, my connection hangs. This
happens with both IE and Firefox and seems to be random at times, and
others it's at specific pages in a website. For example, I tried to
register for an event through this website that is run by VeriSign
(secure connection). When I click in one drop down box to select an
event, a second box is supposed to pop up to select the location, but
my connection stops. Sometimes when I am trying to purchase something
online, my connection will stop also. I know it's not my DSL, as I can
use another PC connected to my home network and it works fine in both
IE and Firefox. There's also times where I click on a link to a site
and my connection just stops.
I've had a similar and possibly related problem in the past where the
firewall on my DSL modem will suddenly turn on and not allow internet
access by iTunes, Media Player, Napster, etc. The program will start,
but cannot gain access or log in to the web site. When I turn the
firewall on the DSL modem off, the program then logs in normally. I've
found a fix for this but the fix still does not help my issue above.
I an currently running Windows XP Pro SP2, I have a BFG NV4 motherboard
with an onboard firewall which is turned off, my DSL firewall is turned
off, and my windows firewall is turned off and still no luck. I've
narrowed the problem down to a this specific machine, as the internet
runs fine on other machines on the same network, all using the same
modem.
Any help would be appreciated.
