Also, make sure that there is not something stuck in the back part of the
drive (a piece of paper sucked into the opening by the system fans) could
also cause this to happen.

A long time ago this was symptomatic of trojan infection, but I very
much doubt that is your issue now as all modern antivirus programs
would have protected you from this ancient malware.
The usual reason for your symptoms is that the drive is failing. Just
replace it.
