master volume control

I realize there was not enough information in the original post.
I have a Compaq Presario. The onboard sound device is realtek audio. I have
used the computer for a year not knowing that the mic volume was suppose to
be adjustable through the master volume control. When I have online chat, I
have to adjust the volume through the Sound Recorder. It's not a big deal,
but now I know it's not the way it should work.
I have placed the mic slider control in the Master Volume panel. I have
checked and unchecked the mic. Neither way has any effect on the mic.
The second thing that is also not usual is the new version of ICQ "Lite" 5.
When I load that program, it shoots the slider to maximum recording level in
the Sound Recorder. I imagine that the slider in the Master Volume control
for the mic would also move to the highest level (if it worked to adjust
volume mic output - but it doesn't).
Please advise.
