Hi,
My son sorted the problem himself by booting into the recovery console on
the windows xp install disk, he then deleted the old boot.ini file and used
the command 'bootcfg /rebuild' to search the hard disk for windows
installations. Once it had found the winxp installation he told it to write
a entry into a new boot.ini file with the OS load identifier set to 'Windows
Xp Home Edition' and boot parameters to '/fastdetect'. Next he entered the
two commands 'copy E:\i386\ntldr c:\' and 'copy E:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
where 'E' is the cd drive. he then simply rebooted the pc and windows xp
loaded as it always had done.
So far no problems or error messages...
Thanks for all the help and advice.

Hi,
My son installed Vista as a dual boot system with XP on a second hard
drive of his PC. After the install, the PC would only boot into Vista and
not into XP, so he (perhaps rashly) reformatted the Vista drive in order
to remove it from his system. Now the PC won't boot at all from the hard
drive.
We have successfully booted from an XP installation CD and entered the
Recovery Console. Following hints on the web, we ran fixboot, fixmbr and
bootcfg/rebuild but the system now hangs after reboot.
Any suggestions? We'd prefer not to have to reinstall XP from scratch if
possible...
Many thanks,
Andy
