Re: Noisy Maxtor hard drive

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

By the way Seagate owns Maxtor now but there is probably still a number to
call Maxtor for RMA's sorry Call Maxtor not Seagate. Good Luck

If it's a new drive there shouldn't be any bad clusters. A clicking hard
drive means mechanism failure and if it is new it should be replaced by
either the people who sold it to you(usually you have 30 days) or RMA'd
through the manufacturer. Good Luck and don't waste time running any checks
on the drive just backup your data the best you can and get a call into
seagate or if you're within 30 days of getting it new go back to where you
bought it.

Hello John,

Based on you description, I've had this happen with my older Seagate drives
several times. I ran "CHKDSK /R" to resolve the problem. (At least for the
time being).

Sounds to me your OS is trying to read data that is located in a "Bad"
cluster or sector, or that the data may be currupt.

CHKDSK /R will attempt to recover data from areas of your disk that has
either failed or beginning to fail.

Here's a link via google search...
http://www.ss64.com/nt/chkdsk.html

Do you own google search to read-up alittle before you do anything tho.

I went through this with ALL my harddrives, even the good ones about 10
months ago, haven't had any problems since.

But this is just my advice/opinion.... Replacing the HD while it's under
warrantee would be the best long term solution.

Hope to be helpful!

Hi

I have a computer running XP, and recently had a new hard drive installed
because the old one failed. However, the new drive is quite noisy, making
loud clicking sounds like a geiger counter when doing even the simplest
things. The new drive is a Maxtor; is this a sign that the hard drive is
faulty or is this just normal for this make of drive. I would be very
greatful for your advice.

thanks
