Open Help and Support | Under Pick a task click on Use Tools to view your
computer information and diagnose problems |Click on Advanced System
Information in the left hand pane | Click on View detailed system
information (Msinfo32.exe) in the right hand pane

Or click Start | Run | Type: msinfo32 | Click OK |
Click the [+] next to Software Environment to expand the list |
Click on Startup Programs

I have opened the Help setion of WinXP and then opened a page called
"My Computer Information - Software"

This shows a list of many (if not all the programs) I have on Start Up
under at heading called "Startup Program Group" . This list shows a name
and an install date.
The list has approx 2300 items in it, most of which it says has an
"unknown" install date. I have managed to copy ths list to file
because I don';t have enough paper to print it. (97 pages)
I have appended, below, a sample of the list. If anyone would care to
peruse the entire list, I would be happy to send it to them.
Does anyone know what this is? Is this the reason my machine seems to
be slowing down?

I had hoped you might have got a hit on this thread, but no.
So I will ask the dumb question.
I tried to follow your sequence but got stuck at the first hurdle.
Where exactly and how did you get to all these files.
